The Heart of Bad Griesbach in Bavaria

Mineral Healing Springs

Bad Griesbach is home to three natural springs from which our thermal mineral water is drawn. The term thermal spa simply indicates that the water emerges at a temperature above 20 °C, a designation that describes warmth but does not reflect quality or healing value.

What truly distinguishes the Bad Griesbach springs is their rich mineral content. The locally sourced water has been valued for generations and is officially recognised as thermal mineral healing water. More than a source of warmth, it contains valuable minerals that support relaxation, regeneration and well‑being.

When applied correctly and in appropriate doses, the healing water of Bad Griesbach offers a unique form of natural energy therapy. Its effects are experienced as warming, soothing, relieving and revitalising. The key to benefiting fully from these natural resources lies in mindful and well‑guided use, allowing the healing power of the springs to unfold in harmony with body and mind.

Precious Water

Drawn from Ancient Rock Depths

The thermal mineral healing water of Bad Griesbach is a fluoride‑rich sodium carbonate chloride water that rises from depths of up to 1,522 meters. It emerges from three natural springs, each with its own distinct temperature: 30 °C at the Karlsquelle, 38 °C at the Marienquelle, and 60 °C at the Nikolausquelle.

With a mineral content of more than 1,000 milligrams per litre, the Bad Griesbach healing water is officially classified as mineral water. Its carefully balanced composition has been valued for generations and forms the foundation of therapeutic and preventive spa use in the region.

At Parkhotel Bad Griesbach, guests can enjoy the healing water drawn directly from the Karlsquelle, allowing the natural richness of this unique spring to unfold in a setting dedicated to relaxation, well‑being and health.

Pure Natural Healing Water

Healing waters differ from ordinary freshwater primarily through their high concentration of dissolved minerals and their natural warmth. Before reaching the surface, this water travels slowly through porous rock layers, where it absorbs valuable mineral components along the way.

Warmed by the Earth’s internal heat, the mineral‑rich water rises from deep within the bedrock and reaches the surface in its pure form, naturally protected from environmental influences. This unique process gives the water its distinctive character and therapeutic value.

In 1972 and 1973, the three thermal mineral springs of Bad Griesbach were carefully drilled, revealing a natural resource that continues to be valued for its purity, mineral richness and health‑supporting properties.

Sources of Health

The Healing Power of our Thermal Spring in Bad Griesbach

Natural Vital Substances

Water is one of the oldest and most valued natural remedies known to humankind and forms the foundation of many traditional healing practices.

The springs of Bad Griesbach are distinguished by their unique composition of natural vital substances, including minerals, trace element and silicic acid. It is precisely this balanced combination that gives the three thermal springs their distinctive character and underlies their recognized healing potential.

Vitality, understood as a lasting and positive effect on health, does not arise from a single visit or one thermal bath alone. While an immediate sense of relaxation and well‑being can often be felt, it is the regular and sustained use of the thermal mineral healing water that supports long‑term benefits and contributes to the lasting success of its natural healing power.

Fields of Applications

Primary Areas of Use and Healing Indications

  • Spinal conditions, particularly degenerative disorders and intervertebral disc damage
  • Cartilage degeneration of joints, including osteoarthritis and polyarthritis affecting both large and small joints
  • Soft tissue rheumatism, such as fibromyalgia
  • Tendon disorders, including tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow and irritation of the Achilles tendon
  • Inflammatory rheumatic conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis, treated exclusively during remission phases
  • Post‑operative and post‑traumatic conditions of the musculoskeletal system, including recovery following knee or hip joint replacements, disc surgery, or hip fractures

  • Osteoporosis, characterised by reduced bone density and bone loss
  • Disorders of the nervous system, including neuralgia and peripheral neuropathies
  • Functional organ disorders, particularly those related to spinal involvement, such as spine‑associated cardiac symptoms or upper abdominal discomfort
  • Acidification of the musculoskeletal system, especially affecting muscles, for example following prolonged periods of bed rest due to illness
  • Early‑stage kidney dysfunction
  • Metabolic disorders, with a focus on conditions such as gout and diabetes
  • General revitalisation, supporting overall well‑being, energy and physical balance

Mechanism of Action

The effects on the body are diverse and work together in a holistic way. Thermal bathing supports blood circulation, helps release muscle tension, promotes the reduction of excess acidity in connective tissue and stimulates cellular metabolism. In this context, bathing in thermal water is also regarded as an alkaline bath, which can have a gently detoxifying and cleansing effect when applied regularly over several days.

The natural buoyancy of the water reduces strain on the joints and eases movement. Regular activity and guided exercises in the thermal baths further support muscle strengthening and improved mobility.

Another important effect of thermal bathing is the calming of the nervous system. Warm water that envelops the body also nurtures emotional well being, creating a sense of mental ease and deep relaxation.

In addition, the warmth of the water encourages the release of so called happiness hormones, which not only enhance relaxation but can also contribute to pain relief and an overall sense of balance.

Bathing in Thermal Mineral Healing Water

For optimal results, the correct water temperature and an appropriate duration of bathing are essential. As a general guideline, higher water temperatures require shorter bathing times to ensure a beneficial and well‑tolerated experience.

Please be aware that the Bad Griesbach healing springs are recognised as a location‑specific natural remedy and should be regarded as a form of physiotherapeutic application rather than a purely recreational bath.

Particular care is advised when using the thermal baths if pre‑existing conditions are present, especially heart or circulatory disorders. The spa physicians in Bad Griesbach are available to provide qualified and individual advice. For potential risks or side effects, we recommend consulting your doctor or physiotherapist before or during your stay.

The Process of Correct Thermal Bathing

at Parkhotel Bad Griesbach

Step 1

As a gentle introduction, we recommend beginning with a light exercise session in the sports pool, adapted to your individual fitness level and physical condition.

Guests with spinal concerns are generally advised to choose backstroke or very shallow breaststroke to minimise strain. In cases of more pronounced discomfort, aqua walking or aqua jogging provides a particularly joint‑friendly and supportive form of movement.

Step 2

Afterwards, we recommend spending time in the warmer thermal pool, where only gentle and low‑intensity movements should be carried out. The focus here is on relaxation rather than physical exertion.

If pronounced discomfort is present, it is often more beneficial to rest in the water while lying or sitting, instead of performing light exercises. For safety reasons, the use of massage jets must be avoided on the lower legs, knees and abdomen, as these areas are associated with an increased risk of thrombosis.

Particular caution is also advised along the spine, especially in the lumbar region, where the protective muscle layer is relatively thin. Massage jets should therefore not be applied directly to this area. In contrast, gentle use of the jets may be possible in the shoulder and neck area and on the soles of the feet, although targeted treatments performed by experienced physiotherapists are generally more effective and safer.

The duration of the thermal bath depends entirely on individual pre‑existing conditions and should ideally be discussed with the spa doctor. Even for guests without health restrictions, a bathing time of no more than 30 minutes is recommended.

Step 3

Following the thermal bath, a gently cool shower is recommended, particularly for guests with sensitive skin, as it helps the body adjust and supports a quicker stabilisation of circulation.

Guests with venous conditions should consistently use the cold water hose in the sauna area to cool the legs. This targeted cooling supports venous return and contributes to a balanced and well‑tolerated bathing process.

Step 4

A rest period following the thermal bath is essential to allow the body to recover and to support the stabilisation of heart and circulatory functions, even in otherwise healthy individuals.

This phase of calm should last approximately 20 to 30 minutes, giving the body sufficient time to adjust and integrate the effects of the bathing process.

Step 5

Only after completing the rest period should further heat applications be considered. Depending on individual tolerance and well‑being, this may include the steam bath, sauna, Sabbia Med, or the infrared cabin. It is important to listen to your body and choose the option that feels most comfortable.

Guests in good overall health may, after an extended break, repeat the entire bathing process a second time, following the same sequence and allowing sufficient recovery between each phase.

Only after this rest period should you use the steam bath, sauna, Sabbia Med®, or infrared cabin, depending on your tolerance.

A healthy individual can repeat the bathing process described above a second time after a longer break
