The Rottal Baths Triangle

Excursion Destinations in and Around Bad Griesbach

Take a look at all there is to see in the Rottal Baths Triangle and beyond! The hotel in Bad Griesbach is surrounded by cultural diversity: baroque churches, typical Bavarian villages, medieval town squares, and natural landmarks. Passau, Landshut, and Vilshofen on the Danube are nearby. Marktl am Inn, the birthplace of former Pope Benedict, the famous pilgrimage site of Altötting, the enchanting city of Regensburg, and the festival city of Salzburg are other excursion destinations that can be reached in about an hour. For fans of cowboy movies and adventure parks, the "Pullman City" Western town is a true attraction.

Special Tips in Bad Griesbach

KUSS stands for "Kunst im Schloss" (Art in the Castle) and refers to the art and culture center in Bad Griesbach, featuring various artisan workshops and rotating exhibitions. The Bad Griesbach Castle itself was built in the 15th/16th century.

In Bad Griesbach, you can also take to the skies in a hot air balloon and experience the Lower Bavarian Tuscany, also known as the Rottal, from a bird’s eye view.

Excursion Tips

On the road to where it’s most beautiful...

Three Rivers City Passau

Where the Danube, Inn, and Ilz meet, the Three Rivers City of Passau captivates with its Italian flair (about 30 km away). The baroque old town, with its magnificent St. Stephen’s Cathedral featuring the largest church organ in the world, the Veste Oberhaus, a 13th-century fortress, and the New Residence are well worth a visit. Tip: For a stunning view of the city, head to the Mariahilf pilgrimage church.

We also recommend boat tours on the Danube – a city tour through the Bavarian Venice and a multi-hour journey into the Danube Valley.

Baroque City Schärding

Just 26 km away, the baroque city of Schärding in neighboring Austria is a true highlight. Stroll through the historic streets and admire the colorful facades on the Upper Town Square, which originate from the guild colors of the Middle Ages. Take a walk through the Baroque Garden and the castle park. Culinary delights are also a highlight – the town with 5,000 residents boasts over 50 restaurants. Additionally, a beautiful boat tour on the Inn River from Schärding to Passau is highly recommended.

Town and Castle Burghausen

The historic old town of Burghausen on the Salzach River is already worth a visit, but the most striking feature is the castle above the town: Burghausen Castle, the longest castle in the world at over 1,000 meters, located about 57 km from Bad Griesbach. Entry to the castle complex is free, but the three museums on the site do charge an entrance fee.

Tips for Burghausen: Stop by the town square, which is considered one of the most beautiful in all of Central Europe. The Grüben district is known for its cultural offerings and craftsmanship. In winter, the castle provides a romantic atmosphere for the Christmas market.

Stift Reichersberg

Reichersberg Abbey, located in the Austrian town of Reichersberg am Inn, about 26 km away, is a symbol of monastic culture. Brothers of the Augustinian Canons offer guided tours showcasing the treasures of the 900-year-old abbey and provide insights into the life and work of the monks. Products from the abbey – including wine, liqueurs, fruit spreads, pumpkin seed oil, and more – can be found in the wine shop and the abbey store.

Event Tips: The Reichersberg Garden Days in May, concerts as part of "Festmusik im Stift" from spring to autumn, and the handicraft market in November are all excellent occasions to visit.

Pilgrimage Church Sammarei & Ortenburg Castle

For centuries, Sammarei in Ortenburg, also known as the Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary, has been an important pilgrimage site. Visitors marvel at the intricately carved wooden altar and the wooden Chapel of Grace, which houses 1,300 votive plaques. Not far from here is another gem of the Rottal region: Ortenburg Castle, the former residence of the County of Ortenburg. At the castle museum, you can explore the interiors and the historic chapel with its listed wooden ceiling from 1628.

Tree Top Walk Kopfing

Would you like to walk among the treetops in nearby Upper Austria? At the Tree Top Walk in Kopfing, about 48 km away, you can do just that. The 2.5-kilometer-long nature trail offers more than 30 interactive stations to make your excursion unforgettable. A wooden structure takes you up to 15 meters above the forest floor. Don’t miss the 40-meter-high adventure tower for a breathtaking view over the Sauwald, the Danube Valley, and even the Alps.

New: The "YouExit" exit game in the tower of the Tree Top Walk.

Wildpark Ortenburg

In the Animal and Wildlife Park at Ortenburg Castle, about 20 km away, you can admire native animals such as song thrushes, fallow deer, and wild boars. But the park also hosts animals that are not native to Europe, including alpacas, llamas, and the South American coati, all of which enjoy a spacious home in the 25-hectare park.

You can purchase a combined day ticket (Wildpark Schloss Ortenburg + Vogelpark Irgenöd) at the ticket office.

Bird and Animal Park Irgenöd

Just 3 km from the Wildpark Schloss Ortenburg, you'll find the Irgenöd Bird Park. On a scenic path, you can encounter over 150 species of birds and other mammals. Have you ever seen a bald eagle, a South American nandou, or the large pampas hare up close? Here's your chance. Additionally, you can admire exotic animals like cheetahs, turtles, and various species of monkeys.

Tip: A visit in spring and early summer is especially wonderful when the rhododendrons planted in the park are in full bloom.
