Nordic Walking Technique

An effective full-body Workout for your muscles

Walking with Nordic walking poles transforms a brisk walk into an effective full‑body workout. With nearly half of the body’s muscles located above the hips, the use of poles actively engages the core, arms, shoulders and chest, creating a balanced and efficient training experience. This coordinated movement activates up to 90 percent of all muscle groups while strengthening muscles, ligaments and tendons in a smooth, natural way. At the same time, joints are protected from excessive strain, making the activity both gentle and effective.

As an endurance‑based form of exercise, Nordic walking also supports the immune system as well as heart and circulatory health, contributing to long‑term well‑being. It can be practiced at any age and is suitable for all fitness levels and abilities. The pace can be adapted individually, allowing each participant to find their own rhythm and level of intensity.

The technique itself is easy to learn and can be developed quickly with the right guidance. By focusing on proper walking form, coordinated arm movement and the correct push‑off and swing phases, beginners can achieve noticeable results in a short time. With support from experienced fitness trainers, it becomes simple to build confidence and refine movement patterns step by step.

This ensures that Nordic walking is not only effective, but also enjoyable and sustainable over time. Whether you are new to the activity or looking to deepen your practice, it offers a natural way to stay active, improve fitness and experience movement in a healthy and balanced way.

Gait Technique

Take long, natural strides, landing first on the heel and smoothly rolling the foot along the outer edge toward the ball of the foot, finishing with a strong push‑off through the big toe joint. Keep your spine upright, avoiding a rounded back and allow a slight forward lean from the hips rather than from the upper back.

Move in a diagonal walking pattern: when the right leg steps forward, the left pole is used simultaneously and vice versa. This coordinated movement ensures a dynamic, efficient gait and helps avoid a short, shuffling step pattern.

Arm and Upper Body Engagement

Use a generous arm swing, allowing the upper arms to move freely forward and backward. The elbows remain slightly bent, supporting a relaxed yet active movement pattern.

This arm action creates a natural rotational movement between the shoulders and pelvis, with the upper body gently turning in opposition to the lower body. This subtle rotation helps release tension in the shoulder area, improves coordination and supports a fluid, efficient walking technique.

Pole Use (Push Phase)

Place the pole at a low, flat angle on the ground while keeping your hand closed around the grip. Press the pole firmly backward, allowing the heel of the hand to push into the strap and support the movement.

As the push phase continues, the arm moves clearly behind the body, creating an effective propulsion that supports forward momentum and relieves strain on the shoulders.

Pole Use (Swing Phase)

With the hand relaxed and open, swing the pole forward in coordination with the opposite arm. Just before the pole makes contact with the ground, gently close your hand around the grip to prepare for the next push phase.

Tip for Nordic Walking Beginners

A smooth and coordinated movement develops with regular practice.
Especially at the beginning, take your time. Nordic walking focuses on precise execution and proper form rather than speed.

Make sure your shoulders and neck remain relaxed, allowing the movement to feel natural and effortless.
