Excursion Tips

Journeys to the Region´s most Beautiful Places

The Three Rivers City of Passau

At the point where the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers meet lies the charming Three Rivers City of Passau, located around 30 kilometres from Bad Griesbach. With its distinctive Italian flair, the city delights visitors with history, culture and scenic beauty.

The baroque old town invites you to explore highlights such as St. Stephen’s Cathedral, home to the largest cathedral organ in the world, the impressive Veste Oberhaus, a fortress dating back to the 13th century and the elegant New Residence. For one of the most beautiful panoramic views over the city, a visit to the Mariahilf pilgrimage church is highly recommended.

An especially enjoyable way to experience Passau is from the water. Boat cruises on the Danube offer unique perspectives, from relaxed city tours through what is often called the “Bavarian Venice” to longer excursions into the picturesque Danube Valley.

The Baroque Town of Schärding

Located just 26 kilometres away, the baroque town of Schärding in neighbouring Austria is a delightful destination for a day trip. Stroll through its historic streets and admire the colourful facades of the Upper Town Square, whose vibrant hues trace back to the guild colours of the Middle Ages.

Moments of calm await in the Baroque Garden and the surrounding castle park, perfect for a relaxed walk. Schärding is also known for its lively culinary scene. Despite its compact size of around 5,000 inhabitants, the town offers more than 50 restaurants, cafés and taverns, inviting you to enjoy regional and international flavours.

A particularly memorable experience is a boat cruise on the River Inn, travelling from Schärding to Passau. This scenic journey offers wonderful views of the riverside landscape and is highly recommended as a relaxed way to explore the region.

The Town and Castle of Burghausen

The historic old town of Burghausen, situated on the banks of the River Salzach, is a destination well worth visiting in its own right. Towering above the town, however, stands its most impressive landmark: Burghausen Castle, the longest castle complex in the world, stretching over more than 1,000 metres. Located approximately 57 kilometres from Bad Griesbach, the castle offers a fascinating journey through history.

Access to the castle grounds is free of charge, allowing visitors to explore the impressive fortifications at their own pace. Within the complex, three museums provide deeper insight into the region’s history and culture and can be visited for an entrance fee.

Highlights of Burghausen

The town square, regarded as one of the most beautiful in Central Europe and the culturally vibrant Grüben district are well worth exploring. In winter, Burghausen Castle provides a particularly atmospheric setting for the Christmas market.

Reichersberg Abbey

Located around 26 kilometres away in the Austrian town of Reichersberg am Inn, Reichersberg Abbey is a remarkable symbol of monastic life and cultural heritage. Founded more than 900 years ago, the abbey continues to be home to the Augustinian Canons, who offer guided tours revealing the architectural and artistic treasures of the monastery while providing insight into the daily life and traditions of its community.

Visitors can also explore the abbey shop and wine store, where a range of monastery‑made products is available, including wines, liqueurs, fruit preserves, pumpkin seed oil and other regional specialties.

Pilgrimage Church of Sammarei & Ortenburg Castle

For centuries, Sammarei in Ortenburg, officially known as the Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary, has been one of the region’s most significant pilgrimage sites.

Visitors are especially impressed by the finely carved wooden high altar and the Chapel of Grace, which houses around 1,300 votive plaques, bearing witness to centuries of devotion and gratitude.Just a short distance away lies another cultural highlight of the Rottal region: Ortenburg Castle, the former seat of the Counts of Ortenburg.

Today, the castle museum invites visitors to explore the historic interiors and the castle chapel, featuring its remarkable listed wooden ceiling dating back to 1628. Together, the pilgrimage church and the castle offer a fascinating insight into the religious and noble history of the region.

Tree Top Walk Kopfing

Enjoy a walk high above the forest floor on the Tree Top Walk in Kopfing, located about 48 kilometres away in Upper Austria. The 2.5‑kilometre nature trail leads across wooden walkways up to 15 metres above the ground and features more than 30 interactive stations along the way.

A highlight of the visit is the 40‑metre‑high adventure tower, offering spectacular views over the Sauwald forest, the Danube Valley and, on clear days, as far as the Alps.

New: the “YouExit” escape game inside the tower adds an adventurous twist to this unique nature experience.

Ortenburg Wildlife Park

Located around 20 kilometres away, the Ortenburg Wildlife and Animal Park at Ortenburg Castle offers an enjoyable nature experience for visitors of all ages. Here, you can observe native wildlife such as song thrushes, fallow deer, and wild boar in a spacious and natural setting.

In addition to local species, the park is also home to non‑European animals, including alpacas, llamas, and the South American coati. These animals roam within a generously sized 25‑hectare park, providing fascinating insights into diverse habitats and species.

A combined day ticket for Wildlife Park Castle Ortenburg and the nearby Vogelpark Irgenöd is available directly at the ticket office, allowing for a varied day out in nature.

Bird and Animal Park Irgenöd

Just 3 kilometres from Wildpark Schloss Ortenburg, the Irgenöd Bird and Animal Park invites visitors to discover a fascinating variety of wildlife. Along a scenic walking path, you can encounter more than 150 species of birds and mammals in a natural and well‑maintained environment.

Get close views of impressive animals such as bald eagles, South American nandus and the large pampas hare. The park is also home to a range of exotic species, including cheetahs, turtles and several types of monkeys, making it an exciting destination for nature lovers of all ages.

Tip: A visit in spring or early summer is particularly enjoyable, when the park’s rhododendrons are in full bloom, adding colourful highlights to the walk.
